Scéilín ó Bhéilín
A Book and CD for Young People

A selection of traditional stories, with music, told by 30 voices from three generations of traditional Irish-speakers from Corca Dhuibhne(West Kerry).
This beautiful pack (illustrated by Dómhnal Ó Bric) includes such famous stories as Port na bPúcaí, Fionn agus an Fathach and Crom Dubh along with guidelines for storytelling with children with notes and glossaries on the stories and accompanying CD. It the culmination of four years developmental work with the teachers and their pupils and were selected from the hundreds that were piloted in the schools. Included in this selection are animal tales, hero tales, local and migratory legends, fairy and religious tales, humorous and ladder tales.
Some of these stories are from the living storytelling tradition, and others are adapted from the archives of The Department of Irish Folklore, National University of Ireland, Dublin, but all from the rich oral lore of West Kerry.
Having a community and academic base makes this project special, involving children, teachers, parents, storytellers, musicians, educationalists and folklorists in the curriculum process, aiming to develop educational programmes based on the rich folklore tradition of Corca Dhuibhne, and incorporating them into the teaching of the curriculum at primary level.
The storytellers to be heard on the CD include the renowned storyteller Bab Feiritéar from Dún Chaoin. Many of the stories are accompanied by traditional tunes from the area, collected by Canon James Goodman from the blind piper Tom Kennedy over 150 years ago, and specially arranged for this collection by Steve Cooney. These tunes from the archives of Manuscripts Department, Trinity College Library, University of Dublin are reproduced in this publication.

Musicians to be heard on the CD include:
Liam Ó Floinn, Pipes
Odhrán Ó Casaide, Fiddle
Laoise Ní Cheallaigh and Liam Ó Maonlaí, Harp

The Archaeological Survey of the Dingle Peninsula
The peninsula is very rich in archaeological antiquities. We know that settlers were here from the late Mesolithic period, but the majority of our archaeological monuments date from the Bronze Age (c. 2300 BC - 500 BC) and the Early Christian period (from the 5th century AD to the 12th century). Some of the more famous monuments situated in this area include Gallarus Oratory (a small, dry-stone built church dating from the Early Christian period) and the ecclesiastical site of Kilmalkedar, including its 12th-century, Romanesque Church. Dun Beag promontory fort is also well-known. The area also has many Ogham stones, which date from the 5th-7th centuries AD. To properly record all these magnificent remains, Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne undertook a survey, between 1982 and 1984, of all the archaeological monuments on the peninsula. The main results were published as the Archaeological Survey of the Dingle Peninsula, by J. Cuppage et al, in 1986 (hardback, 462 + xxii pages. 242 figs., 54 black and white plates, XXIV colour plates, A4 format) and this magnificent volume, considered to be one of the best of the local area archaeological surveys, is available from Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne for € 32. It is also available to buy on line. The survey archive, which is very extensive, is housed by Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne in its Museum in Baile an Fheritéaraigh (Ballyferriter) and may be consulted by researchers by appointment.

Great Britain € 7.50

Rest of the World € 16.00.

Flóra Chorca Dhuibhne
Aspects of the Flora of Corca Dhuibhne

The Dingle Peninsula has an interesting and varied flora, including some Lusitanian and Alpine species not generally found in Ireland. This was recognised by Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, who commissioned Máirín Uí Chonchubhair (with the assistance of Aodán Ó Conchúir, photographer) to carry out a survey of these plants, as well as to collect folk-cures and other béaloideas (folklore) associated with them. A selection of this survey was published in 1995 as Flora Chorca Dhuibhne Aspects of the Flora of Corca Dhuibhne, which, due to demand, was republished in 1998. This full colour, hard-back volume, is available from Múseum Chorca Dhubihne, and all good book-sellers, for NOW ONLY € 15. (Flora Chorca Dhuibhne Aspects of the Flora of Corca Dhuibhne by Máirín Uí Chonchubhair with photographs by Aodhán Ó Conchúir. Botanical editor: Caroline Mhic Daeid. 1995 (reprint 1998).
